Ascension of the Mönch (monk) and the Jungfrau (maiden)
Scheduled tour program
Day 1: Meeting point at 7 am at the train station in Grindelwald Grund. Material inspection, brief discussion of the tour days and departure at 07.25 hours by train to the Jungfraujoch, 3454 m. Hike in the direction of the upper Mönchsjoch, where the entrance to the southern ridge of the Mönch, 4099 m, is located. In easy climbing and over some breezy spots on the ridge we reach the Firngrat, from where we reach the summit of the monk with concentrated steps. Descent on the same route and continue into the Mönchsjoch hut, 3629 m. 650 meters in altitude, ascent time approx. 3 to 4 hours, total walking time approx. 5 to 6 hours
2nd day: Descent from the hut over the Jungfraufirn to the entrance of the Ostsporn on the Rottalhorn. A few climbing points on the 2nd level of difficulty lead us to the snowy ridge over which we reach the Rottalsattel at 3885 m. There, the route steepens noticeably. Over steep firn and ice flanks and some easy climbing we reach the summit of the Jungfrau, 4158 m. Descent on the same route and with an ascent back to the Jungfraujoch, completion of the tour. 900 meters in altitude, ascent time approx. 5 hours, total walking time approx. 9 to 10 hours
